High Energy Material (HEM) serves as explosives, and is loaded into various warheads and ammunition. HEM is a key component to determine the terminal effect (kill and destruction of target systems) and operational safety of weapon systems.

In researching HEM, ADD synthesizes novel HEMs, investigates new high- performance explosive formulations optimized for different environments (underwater, underground, open space, and closed space), and develops new test and evaluation methods.

New high-performance explosive formulations developed at ADD have been successfully applied to a variety of Korean weapon systems. Related technologies have been transferred to relevant industrial companies for mass production, and have contributed to defense exports.
